Supporting the Supporters
The NWA is a voluntary organisation run by those who deal directly with people in
any form of supported housing - but especially for those dealing with older adults.
The NWA is committed to improving the professional status and level of support to
its members. It is not a trade union. It sees the improved training of its members
as having a vitally important spin off for the well being of residents within sheltered
housing. The NWA management committee work on a voluntary basis. They listen
to the problems and grievances of members and talk through issues and advise.
The NWA has no negotiating machinery for salaries or other conditions of work but
where it is felt necessary can point members in the direction of special help.

'TOUGH LOVE'
Living & working with dementia
There seems to be little coordination or continuity of care - when we, Scheme Managers, ask for help there seems to be a denial of how much goes into keeping someone afloat in their own home. So much is about health and illness, giving complicated instructions that will not be followed and to be told 'they are coping well' - when we witness, daily, a disintegration of everyday basic tasks.
